This place reminded me of the late night food joints we would hit up in college. I came here after spending the night across the street at Old School Tavern ('nuff said). I was desperate for some grease, so we ordered mozz sticks, a large fry, and a double cheeseburger to share. All of this was under $10, and was definitely enough to share between two people. The burger tasted really good, but was a thin burger similar to what you get at Wendys or McDonalds. The fries were skinny, crispy, and the portion was huge. I think the large fry was $1.70 to boot! Deal of the day. The mozz sticks were hot, delicious and crispy. All the sandwiches being ordered by other patrons looked really good. I would love to come back for a sammy, especially when my focus is a little bit better ;) and I can truly enjoy it.

Big Portions with great price The BG fries is what brought me here. French Fries with BUTTER and Garlic why aren't more people doing this? You get a SUPER LARGE amount of fries. You might actually want to order one and just share it.I love these more than the duck fat fries that a few local bars sell in forest park. You're able to get a variety of items that aren't just subs, (gyro, burgers, pizza puff, etc) Parking Sucks. World smallest parking lot....Do yourself a favor and park on the street. Parking is suppose to be one way but people are dumb and will pull up the wrong way Someone almost hit me walking in the door. I literally had to push the person in front of me and jump out the way otherwise I would have been like Sgt. Dan and had some new legs. The photo I added wasn't even the same day. This is just a typical thing to see people having a hard time getting out of the park when it's busy.

Submarine Tender have the best subs ever. I don't know what it is about them but they are very tasty and fulfilling! Not only are their subs good but my all time favorite is their Greek salads (A salad with gyro meat) Yesssssssssssss, I love love them!! Submarine tender is also known for their garlic fries (w/cheese), trust me they'll leave you licking your fingers and wanting more.

Vampires beware! The garlic butter fries are super yummy on cheat days. They give a great serving size, I always leave with left overs that taste great reheated or cold. I am a fan of the cheese sub, they don't skimp on the cheese either. Make sure you ain't in a hurry because sometimes the line is long but they are pretty speedy. The prices are decent as well, great place for a fast bite to eat.

  • David O.

Got the "Depth Charge" King size of course. Great freakin sandwich at a reasonable price, only $6.25 after tax for the king size. Great flavor, this place is very similar to Mr Subs except they add mayo to their sandwiches. Definitely will be back!

Enjoying a delicious Gyros with extra sauce on a cold, icy night with a side of fries -- DELISH :) The Italian Beef is good too!

Real Greek food. Family run business that received "Best of Chicago Award". I can see why. Great menu, food just right. I know this is short but you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Be sure to try the garlic fries.

These subs are the best around. Fresh ingredients piled by heavy-handed staff. The pastrami is delicious. You can choose a few sizes, and the subs range in price (about $5-7). I've ordered a few super subs to slice up for parties, and they're always a big hit. I really like the buttery garlic fries. One heaping portion is enough for 2 to share. They're open till 2 (maybe later?!), they take credit cards and have a small, but quick-moving parking lot. A definite win in my book!

  • David B.

Ah Sub-T, a staple of FP and late night lushes everywhere (lol). Seriously though, this is a great place for a sub at a good price. I think they buy from the same distributor as Mr. Submarine because they look and taste similar. But there is just something about Sub-T that makes it better. Subs are always tasty and everything seems fresh. Also check out their Italian beef or hotdogs, pretty good! The sides are a cardiologist nightmare whether it's the cheese or garlic fries or the onion rings to name a few but all pretty darn good. The place itself isn't all that much to look at but hey, you're not going there for the ambiance. Parking can also be tough since they have a small lot.

BG fries = love. Add melted cheese= ecstasy. I recently moved to the area and basically eat at this place at least 3 meals each week. Lunch, dinner, 4th hour snack. I'm scared that I'll start gaining weight because the food, although oh so good, is carby and I really need to lay off all the carbs. I've had the subs, most of the deep fried stuff, the Greek salad... they have many options for all picky eaters too. Love this place and thinking, hmm, maybe I need to visit them for dinner tonight. It's been a rough day at the office. What better way to feel better than some butter garlic french fries and a fish sandwich. My mouth is now watering. Well, a chocolate shake will definitely help wash all the food down. Small is decent sized shake without all the regrets that the huge fries provide. If you haven't tried this joint, you must. They're delicious and the french bread is amazing for the sandwiches.

Came to this place expecting some awesome subs, some great garlic fries, and decent prices. I got two out of three. The fries and the prices were both awesome. I was underwhelmed with the sub sandwich though. First thing, the bread was rock hard. I came late in the evening, but I shouldn't get bread that is nearly stale and tough to chew. The meat and the toppings were alright (not crazy about iceberg lettuce), but it could have used a little bit more. I'll come back and give it a try around lunch time and see how things improve.

  • Sam D.

I love this joint. Been going here since HS (two decades ago.. gulp) and it's always the same. Sammy yummy product. Drunk or sober, never fails me.

    (5)
  • Matt M.

I have lived in OP for a couple of years now, and have heard this place thrown around in conversation. I had the late night opportunity to try it out - mystery solved... its drunk food. Being not drunk really hampered my view of this place. They want to nickel and dime the every-living hell out of you from withholding napkins and ketchup packets to charging for barbeque sauce. The quality is mediocre, it feels like a dingy old 1970s relic. The bread is stale. Be my drunk guest.

  • Sandeep S.

This used to be my go to place for subs and sandwiches when I was living in Oak Park. Subs and the sandwiches are exemplary. Gyros are good too. Don't miss the garlic fries. They are yummy. Highly recommend, if you are in the area.

    (4)
  • Anne O.

Open late which is great. Bread is veryyyy chewy (in a bad way)- and that is my only complaint. Butter garlic fries are very tasty and crispy. Overall, a good spot for a late night, buzzed bite. Just don't go if your teef are weak.

    (3)
  • Dan H.

The subs are good, nothing special but a decent value for the price. Ingredients are very fresh, which is surprising considering the place seems like a dive at first glance. The gyros and BG (butter-garlic) fries- a greasy, sloppy, wonderfully tasty mess- are what really shine. Staff is efficient and friendly.

    (4)
  • Susie C.

I LOVE THE SANDWICHES HERE. They make the best ham and turkey sandwich! Good price and so delicious! They taste even better when you bring it home to microwave it..brings out the oils and flavors in the sandwich.

    (5)
  • Talan C.

Great place for a sub sandwich. The ham & cheese on a pita is awesome. BG fries, you better get em. Enjoy!!! Won't disappoint.

  • Marqui W.

This place has some of the best subs on this side of town great gyros n the garlic fries to die for

    (4)
  • Maria B.

Everything was a WIN! Went there last night and I'm definitely craving seconds today. BG (butter and garlic) fries were spot on!

    (5)
  • Tasha G.

Ok. I know this is sub shop, but they have the best Greek salad with grilled chicken!! It's delish!!

    (5)
  • D'Arcy K.

Submarine Tender is nothing, if not a guilty, oh-so-guilty, pleasure. Not even food as I understand it, and possibly of negative nutritional value. Highly reminiscent of my miscreant teen haunt, Mr. Submarine. Cheese Sub w/ Everything: A purely ludicrous amount of pasteurized processed cheese food of the Mun-Chee variety (the cheese that announces to the world, "I've given up. Actually."), Turano bread, special sauce, etc. - a questionable indulgence by any measure, but everything goes better with a Forest Park bender. A word, to the not-so-wise: Steer clear of the acclaimed BG fries; despite populist opinion. Fries + "butter" + unrehydrated garlic powder = Epically Disgusting

    (4)
  • Lavon K.

Just plain old fresh good food.

    (5)
  • Fatty B.

Best subs, especially the subT! And their Greek chicken salad is the best! Really haven't had anything there that I didn't like.

  • Ted d.

The place is now on a new generation and they still hit the mark every time. Great food, fair priced and not much more you could ask for. If you are in the area, give them a try. My fav is the depth charge and if you like fries, the b g fries are fantastic.

    (5)
  • Kate G.

Delicious subs, delicious BG fries, late night hours... what's not to like? A former OPRFHS haunt for me... I dabbled going there in college and now that I don't live close, I sort of miss it. The same guys worked there a really long time and were always friendly and put up with lots of shenanigans and loudness. Don't forget the Rule #1 of BG fries: if you plan to make out with someone later that night, BOTH of you must partake. I love me some Sub T!

    (4)
  • Jessica C.

This place is a total hole in the wall that I never would have experienced had my friend not dragged me in one night, but I'm glad he did. Really good combo (corned beef/roast beef sandwich). This has nothing to do with the restaurant but, they seem to have an interesting selection of customers. I get creeped out easily, so my suggestion is that you get food to go!

    (4)
  • Davinci F.

Great food great prices my favorite bg fries and gyros and drink for under ten bucks $8.50 that's great for lunch. My wife ordered the depth charge she loved it. Also my kids enjoyed their cheeseburger meal. The guy at the register was very friendly. Great customer service.

    (5)
  • David A.

I've never heard of this place. My friend said it was one of her faves. I stopped in late last night and picked up a gyro and fries. The staff was very nice. The food was hot n fresh. The fries are amazing. My gyro was so good. I'm gonna have to stop in again.

    (4)
  • Deena H.

They do not accept american express. Cash only on orders under a certain amount ( i think 10 or 4 dollars). The subs are good as well as the gyros. They give you plenty of fries as well as in the subs. Don't get the heated sub if you don't want your veggies heated with it because they heat it all together. Parking is tight and can be busy at certain times so be aware.

Finally!!! I found fries like back home in stl. Sorry, chicago but your truffle duck fat fries yuck no thanks. My highly salted light colored fries, how I missed you!. Anyway me and the hubby were driving back home from the doc from our monthly beebs check in. We were starving at that point after waiting forever and being poked weighed whatever I was dying. Yelp to the rescue! We wanted cheap, fast and easy. That's what we got forsure. I love supporting local family run places and it seems that this is that kinda place. Clean, mediocre decor good food. In my opinion better than mikeys by a long shot. Hubby got the roast beef I got the gyro meal. Both very good fresh and satisfied our grumpyness. Def check this place out hours are awesome as well. Will be returning for some womb service for the beebs soon. After I run ten miles to burn this meal off

The Good: Excellent gyros, chicken sandwiches, salads, BG (butter and garlic) fresh, fresh-sliced deli meats, including pastrami and corned beef, open LATE! The Mediocre: The sandwich bread. The sandwiches are still decent because of the fresh sliced cold cuts, but the spongy, chewy bread keeps the sandwich from achieving greatness. The sandwiches at Alpine Food Shop up the street blow these sandwiches away though, and even Jimmy Johns does better bread. Still, those places aren't open till 4 in the morning, and you could do much worse than a Sub-Tender sub at 3am. Burgers and hot dogs are nothing to write home about, much better options in the area for these as well. The Bad: I'm docking Sub-Tender a star for not serving me a milkshake at 1am. "We don't have those right now" - Bullsh*t! You just don't want to go through the hassle of making the shake and then cleaning the shake machine! And don't tell me you're sorry when you're clearly not. Look, if you don't want to offer certain menu items at certain times then maybe you should make your customers aware of that policy so they don't waste time traveling to your restaurant expecting you to honor your full menu!

  • Elpolacko 3.

Quick service, really good prices, easy to find location, excellent food and open late. Good place to go after drinking at local bars

  • Alexandra S.

Amazing food!!! & I am ohhhhh so picky! Minus one star because seriously the place is freezing!!! Get some heat in the darn place! I come here all the time and can't even eat there - it's that cold! I've heard others complain as well... Oh one more then. The cashier ... Needs some personality asap. I am a little freaked out talking to him. Smile or something, dude!

  • Dino D.

I've been coming here a long time and not much has changed. You can never go wrong with one of there 10+ subs, gyro or steak sandwich. No matter what you do, you have to try a BG fries and then you need to try it with cheese. BG (butter garlic) fries come in a large 2 to 3 person twisty bag of golden goodness. Make sure to grab napkins and forks.

  • CJ S.

I think I'm seeing a trend. If a place is open after 2am and people are raving about it those are the hardcore party people. Moreover, the food is probably G.W.D( Good when drunk). I went here for lunch after hearing people raving about it. Plus, I saw it featured on Chicago's Best. I had the ham/turkey sub with onion rings. Don't ever order the onion rings, yuck! The sub would have been the best. All the ingredients seemed fresh, but I had to play tug-of-war with the bread. I'm too young to loose my teeth. I'll stick with Mr. Submarine and skip the knock off.

    (2)
  • Christopher L.

Sub tender is possibly one of the best submarine shop around the depth charge is to die for and they have absolutely hands down the best cheese fries I have ever had I've been coming here for about 15 years and the sandwiches seem to be better and better each time if you're ever in the area give them a try for a great sub.

  • Samantha V.

I've only eaten here once, but it's very close to a bar I visit weekly and I TOTALLY intend on visiting again. If you do ANYTHING...be sure you try the garlic butter fries...but unless you're a really hearty eater, you may just want to share with a friend! Delightfully greasy, awesome seasoning (super garlicky of course, but mmm). Not the right food for a date of course, cause it will give you MAJOR dragon breath, but definitely a to-do indulgence if you're not worried about calories. The subs are really good too, not your craptastic junk like Subway, Quizno's or other barf chains. The meat is fresh, the bread is excellent and the toppings are simple, but make it good. The price isn't terrible either...I can't remember exactly what I spent on the sub, but the garlic fries were about $2.69...a bit steep for fries if you've never HAD them, but definitely worth the investment once you've tried one! It's just a BIT cramped inside, though if you're wanting to bring a group to sit, you'll probably fill it up, but still worth the stop.

  • Alek S.

I can't speak to the sandwiches here (which I suppose is missing the point), but the chicken tenders dinner here is my. jam. Yeah, yeah, chicken tenders, food for babies, whatever. All I know is, they fry you up some chicken and some fries. That's the bare minimum. But then they throw in some sorta sauce (I couldn't tell you what it is), a white bread bun, and some cole slaw. I make an ad-hoc sandwich out of all these elements and it's damn good. It's my pick for a Friday night eating in, and at around eight bucks with a medium drink, it's not a wallet buster at all. Pro-tip: if you like your fries with some extra flavor, get 'um "BG"- butter garlic(?). It's a bit rich, and a bit extra, but I like it once in awhe.

    (5)
  • Sophia M.

Where do I start?? Sub T has the best subs, period. No where else compares. The depth charge is my favorite. Very fresh veggies and a good amount of meat on the sub for the price. Did I mention they also just added Italian beef too!?!? Definitely recommend this place for the subs, gyros, and italian beef and milk shakes!!!!!!!

    (5)
  • Dave F.

A really cool hole in the wall with great soups and sandwiches. Staff are really friendly. Not much more to say but what else can you ask for from a restaurant. Great food and staff sums it up.

    (4)
  • Landis F.

Get the BG fries. The only place I know on Earth that sells them!!

    (4)
  • Antoinette C.

Food is good, but I've had better. I get the turkey sub with everything, it satisfies my craving, but nothing spectacular. I see on their window that people named them best in Chicago area or something like that. I personally like poor boy way better. Last time I went, I got the chicken salad. Not enough chicken AT ALL, few veggies and the iceberg lettuce was very light and nearly transparent and they only gave me 1 packet of dressing for $1 and some change more than the great salad I would get at Poor boy in Maywood. The guy at the counter is nice, his English is a bit broken but he understands you and you can understand him. They are clean and fast. I hate that stupid step that I sometimes miss at the front door and almost always bust my stuff. Be careful entering the establishment & watch your step.

    (2)
  • Margaux D.

If you're in the area at around 2 am, this place is the ONLY place to go. Literally and in the "oh-em-gee this place is amazeballs" kind of way. They not only have subs, but for the drunk foodies out there who's DD is nice enough to drive them for fast food on the way home, Sub Tender has a whole bunch of fried goodness. Mozzarella sticks, fried 'shrooms and best of all, pizza pockets. It's not too often that you can even find those things, let alone that late at night.

    (5)
  • Melissa T.

Submarine Tender subs constituted 1 of 3 sandwich places in my "Sub-off" when my twin brother came to visit. After having tried 2 sandwiches from the Tender, it was the weak buffalo* of the group, i.e., it trailed so far behind the other two places (Pete's, which in its own right trailed way behind the subs from Alpine) that the other two almost lapped them for me. But Submarine Tender did manage to blow me away with their ever popular butter garlic fries. I feel like I can still feel the heart-clogging effects of the BG fries from when I had them 3 weeks ago. I wasn't a big fan of the sub--as stated above--but I find myself thinking about the greasy, salty fries whenever I have fries from somewhere else. I find myself thinking, "Well, i can get a burger from 'insert place X here' and can run over Submarine Tender and pick up some BG fries." That's always a sign of a sinfully good dish for me. Can't wait to go back and try items other than the sub (and maybe some heart-attack-inducing cheesy BG fries).

    (3)
  • Yvonne B.

Did you know that Sub Tender just made Chicago's Best for one of their sandwiches, gyro, and garlic fries? Yeah - I found out the last time I was there. But the Chicago cop cars that came from two towns away might be clear beacon that something good is happening here. Frankly, I love their garlic fries and that alone would make me want to go back again and again. I've gone for gyros (yum!) and sandwiches. The sandwiches are clearly better than anything you could get at Subway (which just tastes like a cheap hooker in comparison) and are well priced. Seriously. M and I went and shared a 12" signature sub (essentially Italian except with roast beef) and garlic fries for about eight bucks. The space is clean and well lit. That's good because practically everyone who orders to go ends up having a seat while they wait for their food to be made. Exactly. Making the food takes a good minute which could be obnoxious if you're accustomed to Subway. Let me tell you though: it's worth it. Some of the employees don't speak English well (I'm sure they know the menu items) and you can't count on getting answers to any questions. Also, the parking lot is poorly designed. Hey - I'm thankful they HAVE a small parking lot but it really is an accident waiting to happen.

    (4)
  • Elliott C.

They are open late and they are better and cheaper than that one dollar footlong place. I think Gerard eats here a lot.

    (3)
  • Jazleen R.

I've only ever had the turkey sub here, but I can honestly say it is the best sandwich I've ever had. I've had the butter garlic fries, which were good but kind of strong and salty. They're own until 4 on the weekends, which is perfect for those nights out on Madison street.

    (5)
  • Jonathan S.

These subs are some of the best in Chicagoland - definitely the best in FP. I especially enjoy the bread and the fries; everyone goes here for the butter and garlic fries, but be prepared to conquer a pile of zesty garlic vampire killing fries that feeds a small family.

    (5)
  • Marisa N.

Such a great place to go. Yes, it's not a super fancy sit down place to sit and eat, but the subs are so delicious it doesn't even matter! They are so full of flavor this is definitely one of my favorite sub places. Don't forget to get the garlic fries. A great junk food place if you're looking for some unhealthy, reasonably priced, great, greasy food.

    (5)
  • MARIA O.

This is the perfect place for a late night run. The food is decent. 3 stars only because I was craving a Chicago style hotdog and they had some bogus style hotdogs-- with pickle rounds and mustard, ketchup, and chopped white onions. No sport peppers, no tomatoes, no green relish. Boo!

    (3)
  • Wendy C.

I've been here several times over the last 10 years and I can't believe I haven't already written a review on this place. The BG fries are what I go for; however, everything I have ordered is always good and tasty (not necessarily good FOR you). I usually order the BG fries with a gyros or a polish. The gyros sauce is good and they are not stingy with it. And they don't give you ranch sauce for your gyros like some places...ugh, I don't understand that! Don't forget to order the side of cheese for your BG fries (like I sometimes do). If you're going to do it, you might as well go all the way! :) (see my photo)

    (4)
  • Jonathan D.

How does Sub T not have 500 5 star reviews!?!?!?!? Depth Charge, BG fries. Thank me later.

    (5)
  • David M.

If I'm being honest, I think it's ridiculous that if you go there 15 minutes before closing, they DON'T have a full menu. They've closed their grill, fryer, and ice cream machine. Why are you still open then??? If you're open, you should have what you have listed on your menu. I am very disappointed in the limited menu if you go in late. If you're OPEN, you should BE open!

    (2)
  • Gary B.

While you can certainly go here any time of day...the best time to come is anytime after spending many hours drinking on Madison. Many subs to choose from but the stand outs are the B&G Fries and the Gyros. If you transport either of these in your car...the smell will last for days. If you consume them after drinking copious amounts of beer there will be a smell emanating from you the next day which may prompt distant neighbors to contact the morgue for a pick up. Neither of these reasons should deter you from coming here. Enjoy the food and just accept the after effects as par for the course.

    (5)
  • Erica H.

These are the best! I have used them several times for catering as well. A sub platter will please any crowd for a party. They are fast too. My fav is the classic sub tender and I always get it heated up.

    (5)
  • Johnny T.

Opted with something safe and got the butter and garlic fries and gyro sandwich combo, which came to about $8. Wasn't expecting much from the hyped "bg" fries, but they turned out pretty decent. Very messy from the grease and better to have when at their warmest from their soggy texture. Not sure if they're worth the hype, but at $2.79 for a generous portion, its worth a try. Gyro sandwich was above average and not skimpy with the meat portions. Can see some having a problem with the service as the employees all spoke with heavy accents, which were hard to understand. Despite any communication issues, they were pleasant to deal with. Credit cards are accepted for any purchases over $4.

Hit it up. I live in Minneapolis now, but every time my family goes home, we go to Sub Tender. King Depth Charge! Ka Boom! Cheese fries! BG Fries? Not anymore, but I can still taste them from last time 10 years ago! Solid place, open late, fast and good. Won't let you down after a night on Madison Street in Forest Park or for a quick bite when you are hungry. Also, Cheeseburgers are good and always doubles! Bypass the hot dogs as they aren't vienna and they deep fry them... Get a pickle though! Love this place.

  • Ellie K.

Haven't tried much on the menu here but the Gyro is pretty damn delicious. I do order it about once a month and am satisfied every single time. Yum!

  • Jide F.

Most people say it's only good after a night out at the bars on Madison but eff that, Sub T is good at noon on a perfectly sober day. The staff is very friendly and still manage to smile even if swamped with drunks Thursday-Sunday nights. Personal favorites: Depth Charge, Combo, Pizza Puff, BG FRIES Game changer: An order of BG fries with a side cup of cheese.

We had seen this on Chicago's Best and were so excited to try it (5 minutes from our house). Service at the counter was fast, even with a long line (on a Thursday night at 7 pm). The sandwiches were all delicious. The garlic fries were not the best I have ever had (seemed like just garlic powder sprinkled on them), so we will get regular ones next time. Great find!!!

A friend and I were going to meet up with some people in the Oak Park area, and my friend said we ought to stop at Subtender because he felt with my particular taste in food, I'd enjoy it. He got my curiosity going by mentioning their butter-garlic fries. I like butter. I like garlic. I like fries. All three together had to be good. After passing the "test" of parking in their tight lot, I was not disappointed in their food. I wouldn't say it's the best gyro I ever had, but it definitely filled me up and tasted good, and the BG fries were as good as my friend claimed. They weren't greasy at all and came in a huge cone. Yes, your breath will probably be offensive after downing a cone of these fries, but they are SO good. I confess...I actually had a hard time finishing both my fries and my gyros. I'm getting weak in my old age. This is definitely a place to go if you're looking for a fast, inexpensive meal. Though I'm sure it is good after a night of drinking, I personally find it to be just fine sober. :)

  • Alex S.

I stop in every week and always enjoyed the food, cozy atmosphere, and the friendly people that work here. I tried many sandwiches and even some that are out of my comfort zone anywhere Els and haven't encountered one I disliked. More variety of desserts would be nice but the milk shakes that are available are delicious and hit the spot nicely. It can also be hard to find parking and to find a seat inside but those are my only qualms with this diner. This place is a must to try atleast once. I highly recommended getting the butter and garlic fries from here. Me and my girlfriend would make the trip there just for those itself.

    (4)
  • Ania K.

Would give it more, because the food is actually pretty good. Greasy as hell, but at 3am it's the best food you've ever had. The service is where the other 2 stars get removed. The guys speak Greek and Spanish to each other unless its to put in an order. They give each other looks and I'm guessing from their creepy smug smirks and attitude that they are talking about the customers. Never once have I seen them smile at a customer and I've been coming here for 6+ yrs now. So moral of the story, don't be expecting any sort of customer service. At least they accept credit cards now though, used to be just cash.

Really wanted to "LOVE" this place, but it was just ok. I saw it on Chicago's Best and have family that live in the area so I decided to rolll thru. Granted, I have only been once so I can't comment on an array of food. However, seeing that they are known for their subs and BG fries, both of which I tried, I think my review is valid. The sub was good, basic, but good. Now let's talk about these fries....HUMPH, BOOOOO, EW, and YUCK!...in that order. As my profile states, I have never encountered a fry I did not like! French fries are my fav food. I can even eat them cold and still enjoy them. These BG had waaaaaaaaaay too much seasoning on them, and not the good kind. I tasted more garlic "powder" than salt. You heard me correctly, no salt on the fries which is sacreligious! My breath was still on "10" and wreaking of garlic hours later even after brushing. In a nutshell, the fries made me sad :( If you have a fast food restaurant and your fries are bad there is no reason for me to return.

Fine if you're drunk but really? There are better options all over town, hot dogs and fries were not great and not even ok in a hangover cure kind of way. I was hoping for a big portion of burger, hot dogs and fries and it just wasn't there, I'm not sure what the hype is about, there are many better places a mile away on Roosevelt.

Awesome food!!! Favorites include: double cheese burger with grilled onions, fried mushrooms, onion rings and of course the BG (butter and garlic) fries with cheese. MMMMMMMMMMM... ALWAYS open when I'm starving or drunk; only closed for a few hours a day. Pretty busy all the time so I usually call my order in ahead of time. Everyone should eat here at least once! Oh and they now take credit card but note they do not have a public bathroom!

My fingers are greasy and my breath stinks of garlic, but I've officially accomplished my first serving of butter garlic (BG) fries. I think these would be best enjoyed after a night of heavy drinking (so you can't tell whether the hangover is from alcohol or grease/salt), but even stone cold sober... They're pretty darn good.

I discovered this place when I first moved to Forest Park 5 years ago, my husband grew up on this place...Been here for years! It's your local sub place, but they not only give you chips, they have fries as well. They are most famous for their BG fries, which are butter garlic, but I don't like them at all. Way to much seasoning. This place has pizza puffs, gyros, hamburgers, chicken tenders, salads, shakes and much much more. My favorite thing to get is the Chicken Tender meal, that comes with fries and this really good toasted garlic bread. I have to say their bbq is my favorite and even beats any bbq place I have been to. On the weekends they are open till 4am. It's right off of Madison and Des Plaines Ave, so after leaving the bars, this place is always a great place to go if you need a quick cure. The place is always clean and I don't ever feel grossed out when I go there. Check this place out, it's always good. They now take credit/debit cards. Yeah!!! I don't carry cash

Sub T will always be one of my fav stops in Forest Park. The staff is friendly, and the expansive menu is just oh so good (and not just for late night drunk food). I still have yet to find subs like this in the far west burbs. The bread is soft, the mayo is thick, and I'm getting really hungry just writing about them. You can't stop at Sub T without getting an order of BG Fries, it's like a sin. French fries soaked in a garlic butter (thus, butter garlic fries). They are amazing and you'll always want more. Haven't found anywhere else that makes anything like them. And I've looked! Just be sure if you're on a date that they eat some, too. If you both have bg fry breath, it's not so bad. If it's just you, your date may be shoveling a full tin of altoids in your mouth. p.s. there's no public bathroom here. and be careful in the tiny, oddly-shaped parking lot.

It seemed like everyone at my school was obsessed with this place. It's pretty good I guess, but I could never see anything extra spectacular about it. I guess probably the only extra special thing about this place is that it's fast food, open late on a bar street. So if you're on madison and you can't seem to find any food, Sub T's might be just what you're looking for.

This place is a classic, and I have fond high school memories of drinking at house parties and then having that one sober kid drive us to Sub T for some garlic fries and gyros. The garlic fries will make you kill a vampire, but my god are they delicious. The staff never changes, and they've always been friendly to me. Even though this place is known for being a drunk crowd staple, you can go any time of the day and the food will still be excellent. Not only excellent, but cheap as hell, too. Their subs are really good, and I love how they use sweet mayo. I don't think I have a single complaint about this place!

Sub Tender is the food I think about when I get homesick, or when I come home after a late night and think "Damn, I wish Minneapolis had Sub Tender." Nothing beats a sub, fries and lemonade at 1am. Part of my love of ST might be that it reminds me of home and the good ol' days. As my boyfriend (who did not have the luxury of growing up in the area) says, 'It's just a sandwich." Maybe, but where else can you get a decent sub at 2am? There's no way I'd give this place less than 5 stars, but damn if I haven't nearly destroyed my car in that horrible little parking lot.

Good gyros, good service. Fries not too great, but that's ok. Grease that hits the spot!

AWESOME. I don't think you can go wrong here, ever. My favorites are the BG Fries, Gyro with Everything Plate, King Turkey (Extra Mayo) - the SuperBurger (or called something like that) is great as well. They are sometimes kind of grumpy and if you don't order enough - there is a surcharge on using a card. This is new because FOREVER they didn't take cards and only took cash which was a pain. One of my favorites when I am back near my native Oak Park. They are open pretty late too in case you are hungry after you have been drinking (there is a bar across the street too) To answer an earlier comment - you can use the washroom next door at the laundromat but like any public washroom - watch what you are touching and use a paper towel to grab the door as possible.

Man I hate to be the lone dissenter here but... I had my first experience at "Sub Tender" a couple weeks ago. I had a sub with those infamous garlic butter fries. The sub was good enough, I ate the whole thing at like 12:30am. The fries were good too. HOWEVER... I don't know if this was a direct result of dining there or just a vicious coincidence but the next 4 days I was completely sick with the stomach ache from hell and some pretty unforgiving diarrhea. My best friend ate there for the first time just a few days before me (he also ordered the buttery garlic fries) and had a similar digestive episode. Hmm... I did enjoy the little toy vending machine that dispensed the miniature rubbery plastic monkeys though I paid for 3 and only got 1.

  • O S.

the food is below average. But this was my worst experience as the guy gave an oily paper bag which he saw was filled with oil and did not bother. Unfortunately I did not realize this happened until I got home leaving wa large spot of oil on my car seat. When called to complain, the owner did not even offer an apology and said it was expected as part of a fast food place to have that much oil in a bag and there is nothing that could be done about it. I will never come back to this place.

I dream about their cheese fries; I compare all others to this place and haven't found many that are as good or better. I love this place, it's only a few blocks from my parents house so I stop by frequently for some cheese fries or for a sub. The cheese fries are super cheap and come in this big paper cone-like contraption, a steal for the price. They are cheesy perfection. I will say the subs are just ok, they'll do in a pinch, but they're nothing to write home about. I guess I'm spoiled by the perfection that is Alpine Subs just across town. Sub Tender is much more than subs and fries, they have a little bit of everything: gyros, burgers, dogs, shakes, fish sandwiches and more. The staff, I assume they're all family, have been here for ages and work like a well oiled machine. Bottom line: If you're looking for some good fast food give this place a try, there's a little something for everyone; unless of course you're looking for a salad then you're SOL... TIP: They're known for their BG (butter-garlic) fries, lots of people rave about them although I'm really not a fan.

Sub Tender is a great example of a particular institution. The local privately owned sub shop. It's clean, a great value, and offers a wide range of tasty options. I frequent it.

The best sub...my fave: the turkey. Great cheese fries also. Fast good service. I'll take this sub over Subway any day.

My brother and I are both alumni of Concordia River Forest. A few weeks back he sent me a picture of BG fries. He was in Chicago on business and made a special detour to hit Sub T's. I promptly made a special trip from Uptown to hit them up. Luckily, my wife loves the Italian ice at Johnnie's so I can get out quite frequently if I wish. Sadly, I usually eat all the B&G fries before I get back to the city.

Haha sub T. I dont think I have ever been there sober. This place is great though. Get the B-G Fries.

Right off the top the map is wrong. The address is correct. It's on the corner of Randolph and Des Plaines in Forest Park. The subs are right on. If you like fresh soft and chewy bread this is your place. You can watch them make your sub and coach them on just how you want yours prepared like so many folks were doing on my visit. You know, a little more onion, a little more whatever. I had a Super size Ham & Turkey that was just great. It was at least a foot long and cost $5.40, well worth the money. Although I only needed half of it I ate the whole sandwich, I couldn't stop myself. I ate inside, plenty of tables and the place was pretty clean. I brought home a Super Burger (4 meat patties totaling up to a 1/2 lb) It was good, not great, but priced at $3.60 it's a great value if your in need of a cheap burger. It comes with catsup, mustard, pickles and grilled onions. Subs are the thing to get here, they come in three sizes with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, sauce (I think it's mayo) and cheese or anyway you like on that chewy bread. Yeah the parking sucks, You can't park at Bari's, Vinnie's or Fontano's either. I found a spot on the street. But it's a minor inconvience considering the good sub. Open till 4am on Friday and Saturday, 2am the rest of the week. Opens at 10am every day.

I love this place. I don't usually get the subs, although my husband does. He usually gets a roast beef and likes it. I come here for their gyros. They are so good! I was so happy when I moved to Forest Park and found a place that was comparable to my good old Nicky's in Chicago. They LOAD them with meat and the meat is not soggy or sopping in grease like other places that I've had them at. I have tried their BG fries, something that they are supposed to be famous for, but I wasn't a huge fan. To me they tasted just salty, not garlicky, buttery, or spicy. No big deal though, because if I'm going to get a nice garlicky gyros, regular fries will do.

One day, when our kids were a bit tired and whiny, we wanted a simple night out at a family friendly atmosphere, so we decided to go to Submarine Tender. My son and husband each ordered a regular sub, which looked to be about 7 inches long. My son ordered the turkey and cheese sub. He loved it, and it was so big, he took half home for lunch the next day (even though he is only 6, he has a good appetite and usually eats subway sandwich by himself). My husband got the corned beef sub with cheese. He enjoyed the fresh cheese on the sub but would order a different type of sub if we went back there. I ordered the cheeseburger. The burger was good, but not the best I have ever had. The restaurant is very family friendly, as is the staff. Very few people seemed to eat in the restaurant; most ordered to go. If you are looking for simple, reasonable food, this is the place to go. You can read more detailed review at: diningoutchallenge.com/2…

Oh yeah B.G. Fries, I can't believe its taken me this long to discover them. Sub T has definitely set some standards in creativity when it comes to taken an ordinary french fry to new heights. I love the char-crunch polish sausage with grilled onions, a little southside action in good ol' Forest Park. Sub T does have a late night munchy hour on the weekends until 4AM, now there is not excuse not to visit with late hours like this. Since I am a new customer I will update this review with one of their famous subs next. Stay tuned...

known for butter garlic fries (bg fries). not a big fan, just too greasy and soggy. i love their regular fries though subs nothing less than decent. not great, somewhere in the middle. regular plain subs. gyros are really good and they have a weird mix of toppings for their polish but its good too. burgers are good. nothing from this place to write home about, but they;re open all the time, hardly ever wait more than 5m, and it's not super expensive. and they take credit cards~

I've been going to this place for years and needless to say the food only gets better. If you're looking for a late night fix or you just want to grab a bite for lunch, this is the place to go. They have practically had the same staff for at least the last twelve years or so and you couldn't ask for nicer people. Last but not least, make sure you try the BG fries, you won't regret it!

As far as a sub place goes, this is my all time favorite. Cheese Fries yum, pickles yum....order my best friends favorite: King Size Roast Beef with x x oil and easy onion. - i opt for small, but you should get the king size, so you can save some for later when you're back in lincoln park and you're craving more. OMG. I totally drive here from taylor street once every few weeks to grab lunch for the office. YUM. *(oh yea, and 325 for a sub - cant go wrong)

Best subs in the Chicagoland area. Always fresh, I have never been disappointed. The turkey and ham sub is the bomb. All I can simply say is Sub T has the best sub sandwiches.

  • Darryl S.

The Good: Pretty much everything. I would say my taste buds were tricked into enjoying the food so much since I'm usually in a drunken state whenever I eat there, but I go there sober too. Highly suggest the BG fries if you're not a health nut. They can be made too salty at times but you could ask for another batch if that's the case. Subs are always good no matter what you grab. Even the pizza puff is good, and I haven't had 1 of those since high school. Gyros are huge and stacked. The burgers are average to above average depending on what you get. The key there is the subs though. I like the roast beef and pastrami combo, but everyone has a different favorite. Patrons usually grab to go as well so seating is never really a problem. The Bad: Never order a sandwich "hot." They heat them in the microwave for a bit, and it makes the sandwich worse. Sure the cheese is melted, but the bread becomes tougher. There have been many a times in an inebriated state I would think "A hot sandwich would be sooo good right now." Then after taking 2 bites, the rest of the sandwiches is either all over my clothes or on th wax paper since I would be wrestling with the bread like a dog and its chew toy. Also, cops always grab grub here too so if you're a belligerent drunk and underage stay away. The Ugly: No bathrooms! I mean I'm a guy so I don't mind peeing in the grassy alley to the restaurant's side, but I'm sure it will be a problem for the ladies. Also since everyone and their mama goes here after barring around Forest Park, you're going to lines so try to come a little earlier than everyone else to beat the rush. With all those bar patrons coming by you should get a fine fill of drunks. With those drunks you can get either the too loud too happy drunks or fights. Either one is a type I don't really care for when I'm eating. The people there are normally really friendly but this is just a warning of what could be confronted there... Other than that...great place with good eats

I have a special spot in my heart for this place. I grew up in Forest Park, and my house was a block away. I remember I would come here every Friday night as a kid and get a gyro and BG fries (which are amazing!). The food is great, the guys behind the counter are funny. It's just a great place to go. It feels kinda like a warn blanket. Other notable items are: Sub Tender sandwich, patty melt, burgers,... pretty much anything on the menu. You can't really miss at a place like this. They been is business longer than I can remember. Plus, they serve the drunk crowd til 4am. Can't beat that with a stick...

Sub T is the reason I cannot eat at sandwich chains. I've been coming here since it opened, many, many years ago. In over a decade, I have torn myself away from my usual "Sub T" sub order and had a Gyro maybe 2 or 3 times, but my go-to is the original "Sub T." It's their version of an Italian Sub, but it's so much better than your average Italian. I love their food, and everything that my friends and family has tried (Turkey Sub, Pattie Melt, Pizza Puff, Cheese Sub) has been well-received! I love shredded lettuce, which they use, and I'm a HUGE fan of cheese. The cheese on their subs are all pre-sliced to exactly fit the bread, but sometimes I wish the cheese was just a little bigger so I could eat more of it! So good. I'm a fan of the BG fries - I think you either love them or hate them. Their chocolate shakes make me soooooooooooo happy. They're thick, rich and delicious, but not so thick that you can't suck it through the straw. Perfect! I could eat a Sub T 4 days a week and not get sick of it. When I lived out East my parents would pick me up from the airport and go right to Sub Tender. I missed it, but I'm glad I'm back and have the luxury of enjoying it whenever I want!

Love this place! Love the gyros and the regular fries are just great. I am not too fond of their BG fries just because it is greasy and salty. Their sub selection is also great and fast to serve. I also bought a platter of gyros for a party get-together, everybody liked my plate. There're also cops who stop by for food since it's so convenient. Great place!!

Mmmmmmm.... Ham and cheese on a pita. Oh how I wish we didn't live across the country! I can't wait to visit the in-laws again so we can stop in, at least once, but probably more, and get us some sub t's!

Who needs $5 foot longs when you have Submarine Tender?!!?!?!?!? I recently moved to the area and I must admit I have eaten here quite a bit. I can eat a turkey sub every single day and not get tired of it. Between the mayo and the cheese I lose my mind! I bought a party pan of mini subs and took them to an event...people went CRAZY! My other favorites are the pizza puffs and the gyros. YUMMMMMMM! The staff is really friendly, the parking lot sucks, the late night crowd is kind of off the chain but it's all in good fun. P.S. If you like men in uniform...this is definitely the place to be. I think I'll try a shake today. :-)

Delicious late night food, you have to get the butter and garlic or "BG fries"

    (4)
  • Mark L.

Butter Garlic Fries. 'Nuff said. Some people put melted cheese on them, but that's like putting ketchup on a Chicago hot dog. You just don't do it. Those in the know put celery salt. Those in the know about "BG Fries" eat them as is.

    (5)
  • Dante B.

1st service is very bad and the employee's can't speak English. I have read the reviews and wonder if I went to the same place. I ordered a Gyro and it was cold along with the fries. My son's chicken sandwich was half cooked. No they do not take credit cards but have an ATM that will charge you $4.00 to use it. If you are drunk and have to eat then this is the spot but I must say don't. It was on Chicago Best and have no idea why

By far my favorite sub place of all time! I've been going here for years and the same great family keeps it running strong - into all hours of the night. Order the butter garlic fries, they're worth the fire breath;)

Greatest sub ever. I often debate what I would give up for a certain food... You know to help me determine how much I REALLY like something. For instance, would I trade my dog for a sub tender? No question. I'm still debating on whether or not my first born will be on the table here to get a sub tender. We're a few years away from kids, but I'll keep you posted...

I need to give an extra star cause they now take credit cards, hooray! This is seriously tasty food for drunk people at bar time. Do yourself a favor and grab some BG fries and a depth charge to soak up the booze.

I've been coming here since I was 3 years old so please excuse some bias haha. The food here is undeniably delicious and the service is quick, friendly and efficient, but thats not what makes this place unique or great. Submarine tender provides fast food you can get at a number of other locations e.g. Annies, Mr. Sub and Mr Greek but the thing I most enjoy about Sub-T is that it provides all the same delicious fast food consistently. Like I said, I've been eating at Sub-T for close to 2 decades and the amount of times I've ever been disappointed or displeased, I can count with one hand. Hell I've ordered one thing and received another a few times and I was still happy. You can't really go wrong with anything on the menu and any sub is really good. And not only that, this place is open late every night and its the same service and delicious food at 2pm or 2am. You can never go wrong here. Submarine Tender, for me at least, is the best fast food in the area. .... And no i did not forget about the B.G. Fries. I just thought they deserved their own paragraph. THEY'RE AMAZING!

I love Sub Tender! A late night, post-bar favorite in Forest Park, I have to say that it's one of the few places that still holds up in the middle of the day as well. I'm not so sure what makes the subs so tasty - looking at each ingredient separately - it's not so impressive, but this is a definite case where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. I always pair a sub with the BG (butter & garlic) fries, which are so buttery and garlicky that you'll be tasting them and your friends will be smelling them on you for days to come. Hours are convenient, service is quick, and food is cheap!

OK after quite a few drinks this is the place for late night greasy grub! My friend who grew up on BG (butter n garlic) fries said we have to come here! It was a great late night fix! They are open until 4 am on the weekend. I do have to warn you, you will need lots of gum and mouthwash after this place, but it's well worth it!!

Throughout Junior and Senior year of High School, Submarine Tender was our local hang out spot: On weekends my friends and I would go there late night, order sandwiches and shoot the shit for 2 hours. This continued into summers during college when we all came back home. We liked it so much that we even got our picture taken there - if you walk in you can still see it hanging on the wall on the right side of the counter. To this day, it's sub sandwiches are hard to beat by anybody in the Chicagoland area and any trip back requires a stop at Sub-T. A few of the favorites over the years: The Depth Charge The Pastrami The Pizza Puff Sub-T is what it is: A place to go late night to get some good quick food. You order it, you sit down, you eat. After a night at the Madison street bars it's the only Worthwile place in town. I don't expect everyone to understand the five star rating, but to me, a place with so much history can get no less.

Greasy and fantastic. Butter garlic fries are great! Be prepared to smell like garlic for 3 days! I used to get these all the time in high school. I would go home and go to bed. The next morning the whole house would smell like garlic just from me breathing! Could stand to be cleaner, but with all that grease I don't see how its possible!

I like you SubTender for your Great subs. A few notches better than than the local establishments and better tasting than the bigsubshops. I'm a germ freak and don't like that you don't have a restroom, makes me wonder.

  • Brian S.

My favorite thing about the subs is the cheese. It tastes like cheese sauce, but it's in the form of a slice; it melts in your mouth. The slices are very unique, they are the length of the sandwich. So if you order a foot long, (king?), the slice of cheese is a long narrow 12 inch slice of cheese. It defies food science. The subs are a step above Mr. Sub, but in that same style. The GB fries are good during the day, and knee-buckling when you get them late night. Also, family owned and operated, which I love.

How i've found myself at subt's 3 years later again? Dunno but da point is they got me coming back. I remember those drunk college nights starving headin back to da dorms and da only place being open at 3/4 in da morning is SubT's. There turkey subs with their delicious cheese fries and jus showing my college id to get a free pop. O it was great! I've been back a cpl times recently and I wasn't drunk and u know what? Da food is still good!!

It is what it is--greasy grub, open late. Yum. FP's answer to the taco/burrito. We don't have tacos, we have Sub T. While you're waiting in line, be sure to check out the sticker machine by the wall--last time we were there it had 'Virgin Mary with Bling' stickers. No joke. Park on the street if you can, because the parking lot is an outstanding place to get a door ding.

Have lived in the area for 10 yrs and in F.P. for 6 yrs (2 blocks from here) but never stopped in. Not much of a fast food preson and their signage kind of made it look like the common greasy spoon. After reading about it in Yelp, I gave it a try...then another...then took friends there. It's actually pretty decent for the $. BTW, the BG fries are not very garlic-laden as some reviews have suggested. They're not even that buttery. But they're definitely a jillion calories more than the USDA allowance. I've had a lot of different things there. So far I think my fav is the gyro. But if you're a fan for the deep-fried or just a common sub, there doesn't seem to be anything they can't make and quickly. Considering what's available for fast food and after a crappy week of work and you just want to sit down in front of the TV & veg-out...this is the place to hit first. The place is also very clean and the peeps that you see there are typically pretty interesting (in a good way). ;)

Okay, I just have to tell all of you that this place has the absolute best Greek salad - if you're into that kind of thing.....great chunks of Feta with fresh lettuce, tomatos, olives, and onions....yum! You can also get it with Chicken or Gyro meat. Who would have thunk?

I had the gyro here and it was huge, yummy and cheap. The butter garlic fries were also pretty good. Although, the gyro alone was more than I could eat. You really don't need the fries too.

Maybe it's because I'm from Oak Park and it's the best late-night greasy joint in the area. Maybe it's because they have everything a little drunkie could want at 1 in the morning. Let's see - garlic butter fries, cheese fries, onion rings, gyros, subs, pizza puffs, must I go on? Maybe it's because the guys behind the counter always know what I want (king turkey everything!). Maybe it's because it's always a menagerie of every walk of life every time I go in there. I don't know. But I love me some Submarine Tender. Thanks.

A good place for the late drunks, but don't order any hot sandwiches. They're always hot in some places, cold in others. Others seem to not notice it, but it usually is 3am and they're drunk. You GOTTA get the butter & garlic fries though. They're bad for you, but taste great!

This is a great little greasy spot with all the usual Vienna beef goods, the service, at least during lunch has been really nice and easy going. They also have about ten or more subs you can choose from and when you get the largest size sandwich, it's no joke. There gyros, burgers, mozzarella sticks, pizza puffs, and fries all had there usual deep fried goodness. I plan on trying everything they got, so far they are yet to disappoint.

I have to be honest. I've only gotten the gyros there. And I LOVE them. They are really big and really good. Great sauce. I also get an order of fries (and then order extra sauce for dipping purposes). Great, great, great.....when you need something bad, this is something good.

I don't even know what I order here. All I know is I probably slur something and they try to decipher what I said. I always enjoy it and the next morning my pants are always a little tighter. No where else is open as late and is as good. Great way to end a forgettable night. PS-They are really nice too.

For those of us who live in the area, I can tell you from experience, Sub Tender IS the only place to go to after a hard night of drinking on Madison Street. There are alot of choices to make, from gyros to sub sandwiches. And while the butter and garlic fries are really something (they really are), the cheese fries are just as good. I love this place, especially when you are hungry late night, and even if you haven't been drinking. It's open pretty late (I'm not sure because I've closed many a bar and they seem to still be open after the fact) and the food is decent. Definitely the place to go if you happen to drive this direction to bar hop.

Great late night eating (or even hungover lunch) in the Forest Park area. Pretty much the only place to go after bar close on Madison St. Subs are the traditional varied meats with tons of oil. The garlic butter fries are to die for, but make sure you don't have a hot date that night! Open til 4am!

This is one of the only places to get food really late in the Oak Park/River Forest/Forest Park triangle. I do have to disagree with Pat G's tip not to order any hot sandwiches; this place does the greasy beef stuff as well as anyone else in the area. If you're around here and it's 3am, this is definitely the place to be. Go for the cheese fries, they're mountainous and delicious.

15 years ago waiting for the first born ,one of her cravings was the B/G fries, We live by Wrigley Field. I liked the gyros but I had to eat them in the yard, even to this day.
